Our interview today is with creator of the Fit Mummy Project Kimberley Smith.
The Fit Mummy Project, developed by Kimberley, is a complete post natal fitness and wellbeing guide. Kimberley is a qualified yoga teacher specialising in pre and postnatal yoga, a Barre instructor and postnatal fitness expert. She previously played netball with the NSW Swifts and the Australian Diamonds Squad. She’s also worked as a corporate lawyer!
34 year old Kimberley lives in Cronulla, NSW in Australia with husband Ryan and their 2 beautiful daughters, Allegra and Samara, aged 4 and 2.
“I just love being a Mum and my little fam bam. It’s hard work too, as every Mum knows. But it just brings me so much joy and love.”

On a scale of 1 to 10 how important is it that you workout and why? (10 being very important).
10! I think it is very important. To me exercise is one of the most simple ways that we can care for our physical and emotional health. I believe in moving your body in whatever way makes you feel good! It doesn’t have to be an hour long affair. 10 minutes of exercise is all you need each day to create a fit and strong body and a happy mind!
Did you work out during your pregnancy? If not why not?
I did. I really struggled with the changes that were happening to my body during pregnancy. I was so used to being fit and toned that I really struggled mentally when I felt slow and heavy. So being able to exercise was something that helped me not only physically but also mentally. It made me feel strong and capable during my pregnancy and it gave me that little hit of endorphins that I was craving. I especially loved swimming when I was pregnant – just that feeling of weightlessness was so amazing!
How much time do you dedicate to exercising each week?
I try to dedicate at least 10 minutes each day. I love doing the workouts in the Fit Mummy Project Guide which are all just 10-15 minutes. I do them when the girls have a nap. They are just so good for helping me to feel energised and strong! I also love Yoga, so I will also try and attend an hour long yoga class twice a week.
What keeps you motivated when you’re tired or the little one has worn you out?
As a Mum, I feel like I spend so much of my day in a state of exhaustion, so I am very particular in choosing exercise that will energise me rather than just add to my fatigue. For times when I am already exhausted, I will do a short yoga practice or try to get outside and just get some fresh air. Once you get started, it’s amazing how you just want to keep moving!
Do you follow a super clean diet or just eat sensibly?
I just eat sensibly. I think I am pretty good at nailing the whole 80/20 thing. 80% of the time I eat well and 20% of the time I enjoy some treats. I have some dark chocolate every night and I love my coffee and a glass of wine before dinner!
What does a typical day look like for you?
Every day is so different. But it sort of follows this general rule…
I have a little morning routine which I try to do before the girls wake up! It includes 10 minutes of movement, 10 minutes of meditation and 10 minutes of motivation which might be writing down my intention for the day or reading something inspiring.
When the girls wake it’s all about getting them fed and ready for the day.
Allegra goes to kindy twice a week and my parents and parents in law also help me out two days a week. So I will use this time to get as much work done as I can!
In the afternoon if the girls are having a nap I will practice a short version of my morning routine and then try and get some more work done.
In the afternoons i will play with the girls, either at home or at the park before we start the dinner and evening routine.
At the end of the day, I will either watch some TV or have a bath and relax.
What do you find is your biggest struggle? Food, exercise, time, motivation?
TIME! I have so many plans and ideas of things I want to do and very limited time in which to do them. But I think that viewing anything as a struggle just makes it even harder. So I really just try to prioritise the time I can work on my business by making sure that what I am working on is really important and in line with my goals for the business.
What is the best part of your day?
Waking up and going to bed! That sounds terrible doesn’t it! But I just love waking up and seeing the girls faces for the first time each day. They are so much more cuddly when they first wake up. And I love lying in bed with them telling stories and winding down for the day.
Finally, if you could give one piece of advice to new mums or mums-to-be what would it be?
Listen to your intuition. As Mothers we have this incredible sense of intuition, but we often ignore it because we think we need to get everything done and be there for everyone else. You know what your body needs. So listen to it and really take care of yourself – especially in those early post natal months.
